what would we do without post its?

Ok Ok, so I’m going to talk about an archaic tool but just look at what it can do, and I do mean sticky notes!

Just the other day I was in a brew pub in San Diego called Coronado Brewing on Knoxville Street and saw this wall. OMG, I just had to get closer and discover the process. Look close, it’s not pixels …. I did not expect to see post-its!

Well, did they first study other large pieces of wall art? Where did they get their concept for the content? Who knows if the artist sketched out this first with a pen or maybe even an electronic device and then played with colour, then attempted to discover how to accommodate the scale necessary or did they possibly take a very large group of post-its very very large group, and then just had at it, the wall?! If so, did they know which colours they were going to use and for what part? How did they make their colour selection? Did they do a test run? Did they tile the design and then do it section by section?

While enjoying this piece of art I was also totally entertained trying to figure this all out! In the end what did they do with the rest of the post its? Maybe that’s what the abstract blue, green and black background are, and all the yellow ones got used up?

I still have post-its in my work space. I have not relinquished them to the dust filled archive of other paper products like many other sundries. But I will look at them now with greater respect, they are a creative tool, just like many other hidden tools in front of our eyes just waiting for us to discover and to experiment with in hopes of that next big idea, inspiration, solution.
